Privacy Policy

This policy explains how the Clipboard app for iPhone (“Clipboard”, “the app”, “we”) handles your information. We have tried to write it in plain language rather than legal boilerplate, because the answer is simple and worth being able to read: your clips stay on your iPhone.

By downloading or using Clipboard you agree to this policy. If you do not agree with it, please do not use the app.

The short version

• Everything you save — text, images, categories, favorites, hidden clips and the trash — is stored only on your device.
• We do not run a server that holds your data. There is nowhere for us to store it, and nowhere for it to be leaked from.
• We cannot read your clips. Not the text, not the images, not the names you give them.
• There is no account, no sign-up, no email address and no password. We do not know who you are.
• The keyboard does not record or transmit anything you type, in Clipboard or in any other app.
• We do not sell your data, share it with advertisers, or show you ads.

Everything is stored on your device

Clipboard is what is sometimes called an offline-first, or on-device, app. When you copy something, or add a clip yourself with the + button, that clip is written into the app’s own private storage area on your iPhone — the sandboxed container iOS gives every app, which other apps on your phone cannot reach either.

This includes all of the following:

• The text of every clip you save
• Any images you save as clips
• The titles and names you give your clips
• Your categories, and the colours you choose for them
• Which clips are marked as favorites, and which are hidden
• Anything sitting in the trash, until you clear it
• Your settings: appearance, language, layout and preferences

None of it is uploaded. None of it is backed up to us. None of it passes through our hands at any point, and no amount of asking us would produce a copy of it, because we do not have one.

We do not store anything on our servers

We want to be explicit about this, because it is the part people most want to know: Clipboard does not send the contents of your clipboard anywhere. Your saved clips are not uploaded to a cloud service, not synced to a database we control, not held in a backup we control, and not processed by any third party on our behalf.

The practical result is that your data cannot be exposed by a breach of our systems, cannot be handed over by us in response to a request, and cannot be read by anyone at our company — because none of it is ever in our possession.

Your data is only as safe as your phone

Because everything lives on your device, the security of your clips is the security of your iPhone. Your data is protected by iOS itself: the app sandbox, and the device encryption that applies when your phone is locked with a passcode, Face ID or Touch ID.

We recommend keeping a passcode set on your device, and being mindful about what you save. If someone can unlock your phone, they can open your apps — Clipboard included. If you back up your iPhone to iCloud or to a computer, the app’s data may be included in that backup, which is handled by Apple under Apple’s privacy policy, not by us.

The keyboard and Full Access

Clipboard includes a custom keyboard so you can paste a saved clip inside any app. When you enable it, iOS asks you to turn on a setting called Allow Full Access, and shows a warning about it. That warning is the same generic one iOS shows for every custom keyboard, so here is exactly what it means for this one.

iOS keeps custom keyboards sealed off from everything else on the phone unless Full Access is granted. Without it, the Clipboard keyboard cannot read the clips you saved in the Clipboard app — the two would be unable to see each other, and the keyboard would open empty. Full Access is what lets them share that one storage area on your device.

What the keyboard does not do:

• It does not log, record or store what you type.
• It does not send keystrokes anywhere — the keyboard contains no networking code at all.
• It does not read the contents of the app you are typing in.
• It does not measure, report or analyse your behaviour in any way.

The keyboard reads your saved clips and pastes the one you tap. That is the whole of it. If you would rather not grant Full Access, the main app still works on its own — you simply copy clips from it manually instead of pasting them from the keyboard.

What we never collect

• The contents of your clips, or anything you copy on your device
• Anything you type, on our keyboard or on any other
• Your name, email address, phone number or Apple ID
• Your contacts, photos, calendar, microphone, camera or health data
• Your precise location
• Your messages, browsing history, or the contents of other apps

The app does not ask for any of these permissions, and there is no sign-in anywhere in it.

Anonymous app diagnostics

So that we can tell whether the app is crashing or a screen is broken, the main app reports a small amount of anonymous, aggregate technical information — for example that the app launched, the app’s display language, the device model and iOS version, and error and crash reports.

This information is tied to a random identifier created when the app is installed. It is not connected to your name, your email or your Apple ID, it cannot be traced back to you as a person, and deleting and reinstalling the app replaces it entirely. Most importantly: it never includes the contents of your clips or anything you type. The keyboard reports nothing at all.

Advertising

Clipboard contains no advertising, no advertising SDKs and no cross-app tracking. We do not build a profile of you and we have nothing to sell to a data broker. The app does not ask for permission to track you across other companies’ apps or websites, because it does not do so.

Purchases

If the app ever offers a paid feature, payment is handled entirely by Apple through the App Store. We never see or receive your card details, billing address or any other payment information.

Deleting your data

You are in control of everything the app holds, at all times, without asking us:

• Delete one clip — swipe or use Edit inside the app. It moves to the trash.
• Empty the trash — clips in the trash are removed permanently.
• Delete a category — its clips move back to the main Clipboard list rather than being lost.
• Delete the app — removing Clipboard from your iPhone erases all of its stored data with it. There is no server-side copy left behind, because there was never a server-side copy.

We keep your clips for exactly as long as you keep them, and not a moment longer. There is no retention period on our side, because there is no data on our side.

Your rights

Privacy laws such as the GDPR in Europe and the CCPA in California give you rights over personal data a company holds about you — the right to see it, correct it, export it, delete it, and object to it being sold. Clipboard is built so that these rights are satisfied by design: we do not hold your personal data, so there is nothing for us to disclose, correct, export or sell, and the data itself is already in your hands and under your control on your own device. Children

Clipboard is not directed at children under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will take appropriate steps.

Third-party links

Clips you save may contain links, and the app can open the App Store or a support page for you. Once you leave the app, you are on someone else’s site, governed by their privacy policy rather than this one. We are not responsible for the content or practices of sites we do not run.

Changes to this policy

If the way the app handles data ever changes, this page will be updated and the date at the top will change with it. Significant changes will be noted in the app or in the App Store release notes. Continuing to use the app after an update means you accept the revised policy.
